Robots take over WCHS
How the WCHS Robotics team is preparing for the upcoming season
Nov 4, 2016
Last year, the Robotics Team competed as a rookie team and eventually made it to Worlds. “This year we are aiming high and are working very hard to make that happen again,” said club adviser Mr. Michael Neal.
The Robotics Team is a club that focuses on building a robot that can complete certain challenges like throwing a ball into a hoop or overcoming obstacles and other challenges that the competitions assign.
The competitions are set exactly the same as sports. They are divided into Regionals, State, Nationals and Worlds. They all take place at different arenas based on what level it is. The team’s find out what the theme of the battle is around six weeks before the competitions begin. Last year’s theme was castle based. This year the battle’s theme will be steam punk. The advisers of the club are Mr. Neal and Mr. Scott. The club meets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and meetings last around an hour and a half to two hours. They hold their meetings in Mr. Neal’s room 212, and then move into the new workshop which is located in the high school to work on construction of the robot.
Because the team is not considered a rookie team any more, it will be harder for them to advance to higher divisions, but they are up for the challenge. They know exactly what they need to improve upon and what to expect, Last year, they had high goals of making it to Worlds and they did just that.
The Robotics team works hard to acquire funds to build their robot. “The way we acquire funds is from sponsors, We don’t hold fundraisers like most sports or clubs, We put the logo or name of the company on the robot for promotion and the company or business provides the money so that the team can purchase supplies to make the robot,” said Mr. Neal.
Overall this year will hopefully be a good one and everyone around will be cheering the team on. Good luck to the robotics team this year and make us proud at your competitions!
