West Carrollton High School
5833 Student St, West Carrollton, Ohio 45449 (937)859-5121
The staff at WCHS would like to welcome every student to our 2024-2025 school year. We had a good school year last year and plan on building off of our successes to keep improving teaching and learning. We will also be focusing on our culture and climate. Last year we restricted phone use from 8:05 am to 3:10 pm every school day. While there was much discussion and comments about the policy, it turned out to be an amazing transformation for our students. Face-to-face interaction returned; there was laughter, banter, and real human interaction throughout the building. Focus and productivity improved in the classroom, and students began to see those results in their grades, passing rates, and achieving the goals they set for themselves. The work that the staff and students did in the classroom produced measurable increases on the end of course exams. We will continue the restricted phone use policy this year so please make sure you read the student handbook as well as the progressive discipline steps related to cell phone violations.
I stress to parents and students that West Carrollton High School is an institution of learning for all students. Students will have the opportunity to learn and prepare themselves to be college and career ready by graduation. This will require focus, hard work, resiliency, and the ability to work with others every day, all year. Students are expected to be at school by 8:00 AM every day and be in class, on time and prepared to learn throughout the day. We have a great staff and great students and every day is an opportunity for learning. We expect our students to set SMART goals every week and work relentlessly to achieve those goals. Every teacher will be setting weekly SMART goals for their classes. The process will create a focus on academic achievement and push all staff and students to work together to achieve their SMART goals. This strategy will help build a culture around teaching and learning and our state report card will measure our progress each year.
We will also be maintaining our policy for homecoming and prom. Please refer to the student handbook for all student behavior policies and discipline progressions. THESE POLICIES ARE IN EFFECT FOR ALL WEST CARROLLTON STUDENTS WHO ARE AT MIAMI VALLEY CTC AND OUT OF DISTRICT PLACEMENTS.
HOMECOMING
Students receiving more than 2 Saturday Detentions, an AEP placement, or a one or more days of suspension prior to the Homecoming dance will not be able to attend. Students must also have the handbook receipt form turned in to the 200s office and ALL FINAL FORMS must be completed.
PROM
Students receiving 5 days or more of suspension during the school year will not be allowed to attend Prom and/or After-prom. Students must also have the handbook receipt form and ALL FINAL FORMS turned in.
Our parents play a crucial role in the culture and climate as well as student academic achievement. Students should be at school every day by 8:00. The school year is ten months long and a lot can happen, both good and bad. Our staff and our parents will have multiple interactions throughout the year. Please communicate through email and phone with the teachers. Incidents are going to happen and situations will develop that require the adults to get involved. The staff and parents must work together to resolve issues and manage incidents. The student handbook is the resource for many issues, so please read it. I stress to all parents, start with the teachers when there is an issue; calling the central office or calling the board just adds layers to the problem, and it ultimately comes back to the building to be resolved. Our goal is for all students to be college and career ready by graduation and we will need every parent’s support to achieve that goal.
I am extremely excited about this school year. I can’t wait to meet the Freshmen and see our upperclassmen. We have good students, and it is so much fun working with them.
Thank you,
David White
