Junior Henslee Strikes a Beat

Anderson Johnson, Class of 2017

WCHS Junior, Harold Henslee, has a strong passion for music. He plays four instruments, and has been making music for over four years.

For Henslee, music is a way of expressing himself, and he is involved in many music-related activities, including: Jazz Band, Winter Percussion, Concert Band, Marching Band, and Pep Band. For Winter Percussion, Marching Band, and Pep Band, he plays snare drum, in Concert Band he plays tuba and percussion, and in Jazz Band he played bass guitar.

Henslee got his start in music from his dad, who Harold said got him into bands (like Metallica and Avenged Sevenfold), which led to him learning guitar about four years ago.

Henslee said he started making music because he believes it is a good way to express his emotions, and is a good way to bring his spirits up when he’s feeling down.

Henslee plans on continuing music through WGI (Winter Guard International), DCI (Drum Corps International), and by pursuing a major in Live Sound and Audio Engineering, which he plans on using to work in a studio and manage concert technology.

In regards to Winter Percussion, Henslee said he thinks this season has been off to a good start, having earned third place at their first competition, and that he really enjoys this year’s show. He plays snare for Winter Percussion, and has played snare for two years.

Henslee plans to pursue an independent class indoor group, Capital City Percussion. Cap City is a World Class Winter Guard International (WGI) group, and they earned a gold medal their inaugural year.

WCHS, with all of the music related extracurriculars students can participate in, is a school that opens up many musical opportunities for students. If you aspire to pursue anything related to music, WCHS is offering a Music Theory class for the 2017-2018 school year, which teaches music fundamentals and can help prepare students for a future in music.
