Winter Percussion

Five passionate percussionists from WCHS are going to spend the next few months rehearsing for Winter Percussion competitions during the 2015-2016 winter season.

A percussionist is someone who can play any of the percussion instruments (snare drum, tambourine, etc.). The main difference between the WCHS Drumline and Winter Percussion is that the drumline is for the WCHS marching band and the drumline does competitions with the marching band only. The Winter Percussion includes only certain members from the drumline who compete as a percussion group.

Senior Joe Boze, senior Kyle Coar, freshman Shane Terrell, juniors Alex Dillon and Hunter Stricklin, and sophomore Chris Millard are the students involved in the percussion line. Bobby Topiah and Stew LaVan are instructing.

Stricklin said that everyone was really excited and very passionate about music. “We’re like a family,“Stricklin said.

“Winter Percussion is going to be a lot of hard work, but very rewarding at the same time.” Stricklin said. “You’ll gain a lot of new friends. It’s just a whole new experience for those who are doing it.”

The Winter Percussion competitions are similar to the marching band competitions, except they are indoors and include only percussionists. Different schools sign up and perform in front of judges for a chance to win. The WCHS Winter Percussion line may compete at the Nutter Center.
