Parade For a Veteran

Alex Przyborowski

Can you imagine living to be one hundred years old? Well, that’s reality for Richard Gard, a World War Two Veteran who celebrated his one hundred years of life on April 6th, 2023. His community and West Carrollton as a whole came together to celebrate this individual, his service, and his birthday. Richard Gard served in the European theater from 1943 to 1945, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge and being injured in action in Belgium. He was preparing to re- enter service after his time at a medical facility, but before he could be put back into active duty, the war ended. For his actions and his courage, this incredible individual earned the Silver Cross.

To celebrate his birthday, the citizens of West Carrollton held a parade for him. Police cars, veterans, and the West Carrollton High School band marched in front of his home. The band played songs such as an arrangement of Happy Birthday with an added piece from the Army Song. Another song that was played was a piece titled You’re A Grand Old Flag, a song that he requested us to play. Local news crews covered the parade, and his local community gathered to celebrate the man’s incredible life and his 100th birthday.
