Wrestling has ancient roots

Wrestling has been around as long as there have been humans to wrestle. According to iSports’ wrestling site, many would argue that wrestling was the first form of human competition dating back to before the first Olympic Games in 776 B.C. The sport is a series of advanced grappling in order to reach the goal of pinning your opponent’s shoulders on the mat. The concept is very easy to learn but very difficult to perfect.

With the modernization of the rest of the world, wrestling also had to adapt to new rules and regulations to make the sport more fair and more entertaining. With the addition of many new rules, it’s only natural that some rules aren’t suited for every style of wrestler. This creates unfair advantages to certain styles of wrestlers and splits the sport into much more specific subcategories known as Greco Roman, Freestyle, and Scholastic wrestling. Each subcategory has different rules and strategies.

The wrestling you’re probably most familiar with would be Scholastic wrestling, because that’s the wrestling performed through the school districts at the high school, middle school, and even elementary levels. A wrestling meet can include as few as 2 teams and larger tournaments can have as many teams as the host sees fit.
